FDA warns against a viral "kitchen trick" for preventing avocados from going bad, saying it raises foodborne disease risk.
The "tip" suggests submerging unripe or ripe avocados in water and refrigerating them.
The FDA responded to one Facebook post in March, Today.com said. Officials warn about the possibility of salmonella or listeriosis.
"The major worry is that any residual human pathogens (i.e. Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp.)
Danger isn't external. The FDA discovered that after two weeks in refrigerated disposal tanks, listeria on avocado peel "may infiltrate and integrate into the pulp."
Surface-cleaning avocado skin won't kill bacteria.
