EU approves one mobile charging connector, hurting Apple

Apple must update the iPhone connection in Europe by 2024 after EU governments and politicians agreed to a single charging port for phones, tablets, and cameras.

The European Commission intervened when corporations failed to develop a consensus approach to save consumers money.

Brussels has pushed for a single mobile charging connector for more than a decade, after iPhone and Android users complained about using various chargers.

Half of the mobile phone chargers sold in 2018 have a USB micro-B connection, a 2019 Commission investigation found.

By fall 2024, USB Type-C will be the single charging connector for EU phones, tablets, and cameras, the European Parliament announced.

EU industry head Thierry Breton claimed customers would save $250 million.
